Construction is not a reliable source of income. There are not enough jobs to go around. The pay is not good enough.
Are these excuses holding you back from considering a job in the Arizona construction industry? Here are three reasons why you should think about getting into it.
1. There are plenty of jobs to go around.
Recent estimates put the number of unfilled jobs in construction at somewhere around 10,000. A study by the Associated General Contractors of America also found that seventy-five percent of the Arizona general contractors they polled are having a hard time finding people to fill hourly construction jobs of all types. Why? Many qualified tradesmen left Arizona after the real estate market crash in 2007, and have yet to return.
The greatest needs at the moment are in the carpentry, electrical, plumbing, framing, and painting trades.
2. The pay is good, and keeps getting better.
Currently, the average pay for a construction tradesman in the state of Arizona is $19.50 per hour. Expect that average to rise, though. Of the seventy-five percent of Arizona general contractors in the Associated General Contractors of America study who said they were having a hard time finding people to fill construction jobs, sixty-eight percent also said that they are increasing pay in order to try to fill them.
3. Getting into the construction industry is not as hard as it looks.
Some trades do require specialized training in order to start working, but many entry-level jobs in the construction industry simply require you to be willing to work and ready to learn.
