3 Signs You Are Meant To Be Self Employed
Published February 16th, 2017

Many people are interested in being  self-employed  but self-employment does not work for everyone. Some people are happier or more successful working a traditional job. But if you are reading this, then running your own business probably appeals to you. Here are three signs that you are meant to be self-employed instead of working from nine to five.

  1. You want flexibility, but also really love your work.  Most people want flexibility in their work schedule, and if you are your own boss, then you do have that flexibility. But self-employment usually does not mean a shorter work week. In fact, it often means much longer hours than working for someone else. So you had better be very passionate about what you do, because you are going to be working a lot with it.
  2. You can balance work and personal life.  This is a very difficult thing for many self-employed workers. With no boss-- aside from yourself-- setting a schedule or hourly wage, it is easy to feel the need to work even when you should be spending time with your family. On the other hand, it is also easy to forsake work in the spirit of spending time with family or doing household work. Setting a schedule that works for you and sticking to it is an essential part of being self-employed if you do not want your work and personal life to suffer.
  3. You are a self-starter.  If you're self-employed, you only answer to yourself. There is not the threat of being fired to get you up in the morning and out the door. If it takes you the better part of the morning to motivate yourself to get to work, then self-employment is probably not for you. Unless, of course, you work better during the afternoon and nights and already planned your schedule that way. But if you cannot get up and get to work without somebody telling you to, then being self-employed is not ideal for you.
