There is much discussion in the news about the shortage of skilled workers in the United States. You may even hear lawmakers say there is a great need for students to learn the trades. But, what does this mean to those who are working in the industries that hire these workers?
The Association of General Contractors (AGC) have released some interesting data from nationwide survey they conducted in 2016. According to this survey 69% of contractors are having trouble finding the workers they need. Carpenters (60%) and Electricians (53%) are at the top of their lists of skilled labor they need.
An article in Fortune magazine listed the drop in construction workers for Arizona as 20% or more. As more of these workers retire it is important to have new workers willing to join the labor market.
The AGC data also stated that 54% of the contractors surveyed expected to continue to have difficulty hiring in the next 12 months. Students who are looking for a career should consider the construction industry. The job market is growing and there is plenty of room for future advancement.
As the demand for electricians, carpenters, plumbers and mechanical tradesmen increases, students can get the training they need to enter this exciting field.
