The Importance of Safety Boots on Construction Sites?
Published July 11th, 2017

We have all seen the signs hanging on the outside of construction sites as we walk (or drive) past - the one about only being allowed to wear closed toe shoes onsite. When you're someone who works in the construction industry, you probably understand why a sign like that would be posted. Safety is always a concern on the job site, from a person's head all the way down to their feet. That is why the importance of safety boots can never be understated.

What kinds of injuries are possible without safety boots?

The injuries that a construction worker could sustain vary, depending on the specific type of work they do. A short list includes:

  • Crushed toes or broken bones in the foot should something fall on them
  • Chronic back pain due to muscle fatigue (from improper foot support)
  • Puncture wounds from nails, scrap metal, glass, or other objects with sharp, jagged edges
  • Electrical shock
  • Hot metal or chemical related burns
  • Various injuries related to slips and spills

The OSHA Quick Card of safety recommendations for the construction industry recommends shoes or boots with slip- and puncture-resistant soles, as well as safety toes for injury prevention while on the job.

Are there different types of safety boots for different types of work?

With the varying trades and weather conditions contractors work in, manufacturers do produce safety boots geared towards their specific needs. Whether it's thinner lining for warmer locations, waterproofing for wet working conditions, or static and acid proofing, a safety boot probably exists to handle the potential safety issue.
