Discover the Power of Making the Right Connection
Published December 2nd, 2016

Making good connections and networking is important within every business. Whether you are an independent contractor, hunting new contracts to fuel your success, or you are an industry expert hunting business partners, there is no easier way to achieve your goals than through  making the right connections.

Rieva Lesonsky , a contributor for the U.S Small Business Association, writes, "all else being equal, people do business with people they know, like and trust. Networking enables you to meet people you otherwise would not come in contact with, and establish a foundation for a lasting relationship." Therefore, in many instances, the difference between receiving a contract or not is having a one-on-one personal connection.

Everyone has heard the old saying, "It is not what you know, it is who you know." That pithy observation has never been truer than in today's competitive market. Networking, especially for the self-employed, is the key to success. However, there's more to effective networking than just handing out business cards. Regardless, successful networking will help you form lasting relationships with other entrepreneurs.

Tips for Successful Networking

1. Visit with Different Groups - There are many different networking organizations out there, including the local chamber of commerce, trade associations, and social groups. Evaluate the leadership, attitude of the members, and if they support each other. Based on the organization's tone, participation can provide opportunities to make the right connections.

2. Hold Volunteer Positions - Volunteering is an effective way to get yourself known to others, and also to give back to your town or neighborhood. Many people want to do business with those who care about and truly support the local community. This can give you an advantage over your competitors.

3. Become a Known Resource - Social media and blogging creates an opportunity to become a valuable resource for both your industry and local interests. Moreover, it builds trust and authority. By sharing your knowledge and expertise, you earn the sale before the prospect enters the decision-making process.

4. Stay in Touch - One of the biggest mistakes when networking is not staying in touch with contacts. It does not matter if it is an in-person connection made at a trade show or the virtual "friendship" of a Twitter Follower, find reasons to make regular contact. It is important to "touch" contacts once or twice a month to help strengthen your bond.
